Escape rooms have been around for a little over 10 years. The first-ever room was created in Japan back in 2007, and since then this new form of entertainment has spread across the world as a pop-culture sensation. When it comes to escape games as a business opportunity, there are several things you need to consider before diving straight into it because there really isn’t just one type of escape room. Since their creation, creators have been using their creative minds to create different scenarios and themes for players to try and solve puzzles within a time limit. However, not all themes fit any specific category; here we take a look at some popular categories that most escape rooms fall under:
Traditional escape room:
This type of escape room is the first one that was created and is where all other subcategories originate. A traditional escape game takes place in a closed space, with objects hidden around the room which players need to find in order to solve puzzles and thus “escape” – hence the name. Most traditional rooms are set in castles, pirate ships, or laboratories; basically, any setting which lends itself to creating clues for players out of ordinary items you’d normally see around the home. An example of this would be if you had an empty picture frame hung on a wall, inside there might be a clue written on the back of it about where another object can be found containing more information about how to proceed with solving the next puzzle.
Progressive escape room:
The main difference between this room and a traditional one is that there’s no limit to how many people can play, so multiple groups take part in the same game at once – often with different starting points in the story. Progression in these kinds of escape games is a lot more linear and the story begins at the start which means that players have to be on their A-game from the very beginning in order to solve each of the puzzles one after another so they can progress through the main storyline. In some rooms, there might even be a time limit for how long you have to beat it, so being smart about using your time effectively is also important! These types of rooms are usually more intense than traditional ones because since you might have multiple groups playing simultaneously, tackling all of them at once can get quite hectic.
Physical escape room:
This type of room is probably the most popular one out there because it incorporates a lot of physical activity into the game. Players are usually required to do things like climb, crawl, and race against the clock in order to escape – and sometimes the puzzles themselves are physically challenging too. These rooms are perfect for people who love getting their blood pumping and enjoy feeling a sense of achievement from being active. These rooms are often very realistic which is why a lot of them mimic real-life scenarios, such as getting stuck in a sinking boat and having to escape before it goes down. There’s nothing quite like this type of room out there so you have to give it a go at least once!
Locked room mystery:
Locked room mysteries are books which were written by British author John Dickson Carr in the 1930s and since then many creators of escape rooms have taken inspiration from these. This type of room is more like a traditional one – except it’s very hard to solve, even for the most experienced players out there! The layout is usually pretty complex and clues can be hidden in the most obscure of places so it takes a lot of focus and concentration to crack the code. If you’re someone who loves a good challenge and doesn’t mind getting a little frustrated, then this is definitely the type of room for you!
